Equipment setup and safety

A good training station is solid, cannot be moved, and includes both a pull-up bar and dip bars. A steel apparatus easily carries up to 250 kilograms and can hold two people at once.

Always check the bar before you use it, in every session and every setup. Push and pull it to test that it is secure, and confirm that nothing is poking out and that the surface is normal.

On a less sturdy bar, limit the swing and stay slightly tense with the hips squeezed. Check whether a bar can handle the extra load of a jump and catch, beyond steady bodyweight.

Outdoor bars are more stable when they are buried deep; some installations barely move. A floor-supported bar setup is better suited to static holds, and incorrect execution can create swing forces that lift or push the bar.

A setup can slip when you do not put your full weight on it, and placing a heavy object on top of an unstable setup may not stop it from tipping.

On supports that can tip or move, move slowly and place the support slightly forward so it does not move backward. Use a fixed support for movements that need one; a sliding support lets the heel come off the ground.

A high ceiling with a bar available is ideal for movements that need overhead room.

Train the vertical-to-downward entry on a sturdier bar, such as an outdoor one.

Ring muscle-ups are substantially harder than the bar version, especially at the beginning.

Check that ring straps are equal; unequal straps make the body hang crooked.

For ring push-ups, place one foot in each ring at the toes and keep the hands on the floor.

Put parallel bars against a wall and hold them near the middle or the wall-side section so the load bears fully inward. When socks slip on a mat, set them on a solid surface such as a table. Adjust the gap between supports so your legs fit through; a gap that is too narrow blocks the movement.

Place the hands side by side and facing each other, with a gap of one elbow plus four fingers, and adjust support spacing to each person’s own measure. Two supports are enough for the setup; a high parallel bar is not needed.

A parallel-bar static position can look comfortable, but the descent is harder, especially when the bars are high.

On a wall ladder, hold the last bar, which usually sits slightly forward, and lean the body against the wall so you do not drift backward. Position the wall directly in front of you; an angled wall is less useful.

In dumbbell push-ups, control the forward-backward travel of the dumbbells by squeezing; parallettes can fix them in place. Keep prop supports aligned and stable in prop-based push-ups, and if a book or small support shifts, reposition it into the push-up position.

Orient the mat and your facing with the intended direction of the movement, stay inside the mat, position mats far enough back to let the foot pass through, and start slightly farther back when your height needs more room from the wall.

Remove pads that interfere with hand placement, and keep the feet from landing on them during descent.

Anchor a resistance band under a heavy object on the floor to work the abs. The anchor only needs enough resistance to stay put; it does not need to be very heavy, and a bed leg can serve as one.

Anchor a band in a door by opening the door toward you, passing the band through the pinch on the edge, and keeping it perpendicular to the door so it cannot slip out. A door handle can anchor a band when the resistance is light, around ten kilograms, and a handle at chest height works well.

Place the band under both feet, stepping on it from the outside, turn the foot slightly outward so the band stays away from the body, and move slowly to one side while breathing. For back work, route the band under the part of a chair that touches the floor and use foot placement to stabilize the setup. If straightening the legs leaves the band slack, move a little farther back.

A band anchored at the feet can slide up the leg at a certain point in the movement.

Heavy bands can slip during pulls; keep the grip, elbows, and band in one stable line.

Fold a band double so one part is in each hand, and wrap it once around the hand. To mimic a decline bench press with a band, route it behind you, wrap it around the waist and hand, keep it tight, and push from a bench-like position.

A cut resistance band can be arranged in joined or angled configurations for different movements.

Keep the band as stable on the floor as possible; some lifting at the sides is normal. In a banded squat, keep the heels down, because the band is under them. For a band shoulder press, stand inside the loop, keep the band routed outside, and press upward. For band triceps work, anchor the band high and route it from above.

For a seated band back exercise, sit upright, route the band under the feet, and pull it toward the body. For the floor band exercise, pass the band around the waist and get inside it; do not attach the two ends to both feet separately, because that makes the exercise hard.

Sit on the floor for this band exercise and pass the band in the intended direction. For this band exercise, route the band through the back and armpit and inside the legs, then hold and pull it with the hands.

With a high bar, thread the band through the setup, pull it toward the bar, and sit afterward so it does not slip from the waist.

A chair makes the high-bar band setup more comfortable.

Place the band around the waist or upper hips with an open stance; bring it to waist height and choose a thicker band, because thicker is better for this setup.

Configure the band around the feet so the same setup can be used for a subsequent leg-opening stretch. For a band-assisted stretch, route the band behind the back, attach one end around the foot, and keep it in place.

Passing just one part of the band through the ring is enough for this setup.

Use the most solid support available; for a swinging L-sit, choose the setup that holds most firmly. For a rope setup, keep the ropes roughly shoulder-width apart, close together, and high enough for the swinging L-sit.

Load barbell plates symmetrically; equal total weight on each side is not enough. Always attach and use the clips or collars on the bar.

When plates are too small for the needed height, raise them with something underneath.

Use a dumbbell placed on the foot to load and unload a bar more easily.

For weighted dips and pull-ups, squeeze a single dumbbell at two points so it stays almost completely still. Squeeze the added weight at two points, one to secure it firmly and one to keep it centered, because holding it in only one place leaves it off to the side. Weighted pull-ups can be loaded with a plate held on the knees, a plate attached around the waist, or a dumbbell squeezed in place.

Holding a dumbbell between the legs for weighted pull-ups changes leg muscle use and can distract attention, with a real chance of dropping it.

For sit-ups, put the weight on the front of the body and take it off the back.

Choose a grip point that makes the target rep range genuinely challenging; if it does not challenge you, move to a harder position.

Handle weights one at a time.

For a bar-supported hold, pad the metal contact point and position the hands and head at the demonstrated support points. For the hold with the bar under the armpit, press up first before settling into the position.

When there is no place to brace the back, the incline setup will not work; lie completely flat and do the movement from there.

For Bulgarian split squats, a support that is too high is unsuitable, because the foot cannot be secured firmly. Stabilize a box by squeezing it laterally with the foot. Prefer equipment that does not roll, and work to keep it from rolling during use.

In a wall-based setup, keep a small distance from the wall; standing about an arm’s length away is too far.

Squeeze the iron jaw with the jaw, not the teeth; place it inside and squeeze.
